Visual Arts

The visual arts component of this year’s festival promises to make our grounds under the trees more magical and beautiful than ever.

Complementing the festival will be the premiere show of the Community Portrait Project which is a photography exhibition and community based project. Curated from an open call for photographs of Brandon’s downtown core, as well as distribution of 25 disposable cameras to people who live and work in the downtown, the exhibition is a celebration of one of Brandon’s oldest, most vibrant neighbourhoods and mature communities.

The BFMAF is looking for art installations to be displayed during the run of the festival this year from the 22nd of July to the 25th. We are looking for bold, high impact and challenging pieces that contribute to the visual environment of the festival.

The set-up time for installations will be July 22nd (Thursday) from 10am until sunset and take down for the installations will be the Sunday evening (25th) or Monday the 26th from 9am to 2pm.

The grounds for the Festival are located behind the Keystone Centre in the tree covered area. There are many open spaces available on the grounds as well as stands of trees, some wilder and denser than others. We would encourage the use of the natural environment, either as a compliment or in opposition to your work.

We ask that you ensure no damage to trees occurs if you wish to hang or install pieces in them. Artists whose proposals are chosen will be given a full access pass to the festival, including access to the food and backstage areas, an honorarium of $300 dollars and write up in the program. Submissions can be group submissions and one pass per artist will be given but the honorarium remains at $300 per installation.

Artists are responsible for checking in on their installations over the course of the weekend as well as spending time answering questions about them during an artist walk as part of festival programming. Overnight security will be on-site for the duration of the festival. Please send a brief (200 word max) proposal of your installation, as well as photos if these are existing works. Artists name and contact information should be included.
