Colin Corneau and John Scott
Organized by the Brandon Folk, Music and Art Society, Visual Arts Committee

July 29- September 18, 2010
…Opening Reception Thursday, August 26th @ 7:30pm

This year the Brandon, Folk, Music, and Arts Society (BFMAS) extended its exploration and celebration of downtown Brandon by inviting community members to have their portraits taken by local photographers Colin Corneau and John Scott. This project provided an opportunity for Scott and Corneau to interact with the downtown community in a semi-formal setting. As a result, the portraits of the community members are collaboration between the artists and their subjects.

Culture Days

Monday, August 16th, 2010

The Brandon Downtown Arts and Cultural Festival will bring together artists from diverse cultural backgrounds and showcase their activities downtown. This is a multi-organization event, part of a larger series of events called Culture Days to take place September 24th-26th, 2010.

The event seeks to connect and build community involvement in the arts, in downtown activities and with one another. We are still accepting programming ideas from other organizations, groups and individuals. Please keep reading for more information! No idea is too big or too small!

An example of some of the activities are – Son Latino, playing music while members of both the Latin community and local dance schools teach festival attendees some dances. Another would be visual artists from China, the Ukraine, El Salvador and those of Canadian origin working together at the BFMAS studio space on collaborative drawings and paintings that festival attendees would also be invited to work on.

The festival seeks to bridge Cultural gaps using the arts as a common language, as well as bringing people into downtown to share this experience as a part of the Federal Program Culture Days. There will be music, dancing, visual arts, poetry sweatshops, children’s cultural programming, vendors from the International Food Market and more. http://www.culturedays.ca/

If you would like to volunteer, contribute to programming, have a table or booth, ideas or suggestions please feel free to email brandonfolkfestival@gmail.com. We will be having another Planning Committee meeting the first week of September. More will be posted on our website about the days activities in the coming weeks.
